THE UNCOVERED ATHLETE
WHERE DISCIPLINE IS LAID BARE
photos by Stefan Pinto
“The Uncovered Athlete” was photographed backstage at bodybuilding competition(s), in the hours before the doors opened or performances began.

The shots were taken either right after getting spray tanned, before getting spray tanned, in empty or almost empty hotel conference rooms, backstage (literally), dressing rooms, hallways… lots of hallways, on the show floor (before the show opened or sometimes cutting it super close to show opening), and right after a contest or a Q and A session.

These men were unapologetically open about their bodies and entirely comfortable being seen. Many welcomed the camera, posed willingly, and understood nudity not as vulnerability but as the natural conclusion of years of discipline and display. In this space, nudity is neither accidental nor hidden. Bodies are oiled, spray-tanned, adjusted, rested. Penises, bare asses, and exposed skin are simply part of the working environment.

Bodybuilding is a practice rooted in showing the body, and backstage that impulse is unfiltered. What appears here is not provocation for its own sake, but a culture of confidence, pride, and familiarity with exposure. This series documents that openness honestly, without disguise, and without shame.
